7 Best Down Comforters, According to Textile Experts

Get ready to hibernate this winter with these warm and cozy picks.

Best Down Comforter
Danielle Occhiogrosso Daly

Down comforters offer the best insulation thanks to clusters that trap in heat to give you warmth without weighing you down. The GolfHr Institute Textiles Lab has evaluated dozens of styles over the years — looking at the insulation, overall construction, and washability — to find the ones that are both warm and long-lasting. These picks will keep you warm night after night.

How to Choose The Right Down Comforter
image

Look at the fill power (or the amount of space one ounce of the down takes up). You can usually find this number printed on the packaging or in the product description. The higher the number, the more air the down traps and the warmer it will be. If you're looking to stay cozy, you'll want a fill power of 600 or higher.

Check the construction. A baffle-box design (that looks like the checkered patterns on quilts from the outside) has walls of fabric inside to help contain the down so it doesn't move from one section to another and cause lumps or cold spots.

Consider how to clean. Most of our picks can be machine washed in a large capacity washer, but some need to be dry cleaned. You can also use a comforter protector to keep allergens out, and you won't need to wash it as often. And if you're worried about allergies, check with the brand to make sure the down has been thoroughly cleaned in the production process to get rid of dust and odor.

Why we love it: L.L. Bean prides itself in its innovative construction: the unique gate system means the clusters don't shift inside its cover. Its 600 fill power offers solid warmth and online reviewers compare the fluffiness to sleeping on a cloud. To top it off, the down is both ethically sourced and repeatedly cleaned during the production process to eliminate odors and allergens.

Take note: It's the most expensive comforter in our roundup. Also, some owners complained of a slight crinkly noise, but simply attaching a duvet cover to its built-in loops can help.

• Permabaffle gate construction
• Machine washable in a large capacity machine
• Available in twin, full, queen, and king
