- Tennis star Sloane Stephens has been engaged to her future husband, Jozy Altidore, since April.
- Though Sloane (who will play in the 2019 U.S. Open in August) is a Grand Slam champ, her other half is a soccer star.
Sloane Stephens is a powerhouse on the tennis court, but few know that she’s also one-half of a power couple. She and her future husband Jozy Altidore are an unstoppable force, as they have taken over the tennis and soccer world, respectively. While Sloane is expected to be a top contender in this month’s U.S. Open tournament, her fiancé has been making a name for himself as a forward for Toronto FC and the United States national team.
When he’s not on the field, you can usually find Jozy in Sloane’s player’s box. They’re each other’s greatest support system, and their love story goes all the way back to elementary school.
Though they live largely private lives, here’s everything we know about this sporty couple.
They met when they were kids
When Sloane was 10, she moved to Florida with her mom and stepdad to pursue her tennis career. And when she got to Fort Lauderdale, she met Jozy … but sparks didn’t exactly fly right away.
“The first time I met him was in fifth grade,” she described to YouTuber Avonna Wilson, who referred to Sloane as her older sister. “He used to bully me. We went to school together in fifth grade … He was older than me. He used to bully me. He dumped me in the trash can and my mom had to come pick me up from school.”
They reconnected and started dating in 2016, and Sloane’s mom was understandably surprised.
“When I told my mom I was dating Jozy, she said, ‘The boy who threw you in the trash can?’” she recalled. “‘Him, madly in love with him, mom.’ Sure know how to pick ‘em, huh?”
But this Jozy is different than the childhood pest she once knew.
“He has such a good heart,” she said, when asked about what she loves most about Jozy. “He is so sweet ... He has such a good heart and he is such a good dad. I think through our relationship, we’ve grown a lot together. Like, a lot of stuff has happened and I think just as a person, as a dad, he’s just grown so much and I’m so proud.”
Another thing to be proud of is his outstanding soccer career. Jozy went pro he was just 17 and was signed to the New York MetroStars (now called the New York Red Bulls). Since then, he’s made over 100 appearances for the national team, played in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and has competed in two World Cups.
Jozy first appeared on Sloane’s Instagram in July 2017
Though she didn’t tag him or mention his name, you can see that Jozy is holding her hand — but his face is out of the frame.
Months later, she shared a series of photos with perhaps the cutest caption of all time: “My first crush.”
Jozy supports her at any match he can, and he’s even admitted that watching her is more difficult than playing his professional matches. When asked which was tougher, he said, “Hands down, watching her. Not even close.”
Most notably, he was there when she was in the 2018 French Open against Simona Halep.
Simona ended up winning in three sets, but Sloane showed just how happy she was in an Instagram post dedicated to her man. She captioned it, “My two trophies.”
Unfortunately, he couldn’t be there for Sloane’s biggest win in the 2017 U.S. Open final. Though he was there for the semis, he had a match of his own that day. Before his game was over, he shared how proud he was of his then-girlfriend, whose championship win came after her recovery from a serious foot injury in 2016.
“I’m thrilled for her,” he said. “She’s worked really hard to get back to where she is right now. I couldn’t be happier.”
Aside from being there for her in the stands, he’s also there to help her look her best. For example, you need to check out this adorable video of him braiding her hair.
These two are long distance relationship goals
Living far from your significant other is never easy, but these two manage to make it work. Sloane is all over the world during tennis season (which is basically January to November), and Jozy flies to watch her when he can. And in between tournaments, Sloane jets over to Toronto to spend time with him.
“I think people forget that we’re human, and everyone’s allowed to have a life,” she told American Way about balancing her personal and professional life in August 2018. “You can’t wake up one day and look back, and be like, Dang, I should have married him. You know?”
Sloane and Jozy announced their engagement in April 2019
The couple loves the idea of spending forever together. In her post, Sloane wrote, “Forever yes.”
And Jozy captioned his, “Forever starts now.”
Sloane is about to become a stepmom, too
Jozy has a four-year-old son named Cameron, and their family of three is beyond precious. When he’s not sharing photos of his soccer team, you’ll likely find photos and videos of Jozy with Sloane and Cameron.
I mean, just look at this video of Cameron trying to copy his dad:
Though we managed to find plenty of information about this couple, they prefer to stay low key (a move we fully support). Their desire to keep (most of) their personal lives private is best summed up by Jozy:
“I’m not a public person, and she’s not really either,” he told Hot 97. “We’re very chill, laid back, but you’re not gonna see us stumbling out of [the nightclub] 1Oak.”
So, Sloane and Jozy, we have to ask … can we come over and chill?
